Is Sheppard Pratt a not-for-profit organization?

Yes. Sheppard Pratt is a 501 (C) 3 charitable organization. Contributions are tax deductible to the full extent of the law.

Why does Sheppard Pratt require philanthropic support?

Philanthropy is integrally tied into the strategic planning and budgeting process at Sheppard Pratt, which makes charitable gifts critical to the realization of the institution’s mission.  Philanthropy supports state-of-the-art facilities, outstanding patient care, special education programs and cutting-edge research.  In short, philanthropy reaches every corner of the health system.

What are Sheppard Pratt’s other sources of revenue?

In addition to philanthropic support, Sheppard Pratt has four main funding sources:

Patient Care
Local, state and federal funding of education programs
Grant support from the National Institutes of Health and similar organizations
Endowment Interest Income

What are Sheppard Pratt’s financial goals?

We are a not-for-profit organization dedicated to excellence in patient care, education and research. We do not seek to accumulate wealth for its own sake, but rather to equip and maintain an exceptionally well-trained staff to care for our patients, educate our students and build out our research program.

If I donate to the area of greatest need, how can I be assured that my gift will have an impact?

Gifts directed to the “area of greatest need,” or unrestricted donations, are allocated by an internal Grants Committee comprised of Trustees and members of Sheppard Pratt’s executive management team.  Before unrestricted dollars are released, clinicians and staff must submit detailed grant requests to the Grants Committee indicating how funding will benefit patient or student needs.

May I specify how I want Sheppard Pratt to use my gift?

Yes.  Please use our Fund Finder Tool to review a variety of ways to restrict your gift to a particular area of need.  If you do not find an area of interest, you may elect to give to the area of greatest need or contact the Office of Philanthropy  at 410-938-4020 to discuss your interests further.  We will work very hard to identify an area of need that satisfies your charitable interests.

May I give anonymously?

Absolutely.  We will respect your desire for anonymity, however, be sure to indicate your wishes when prompted on our giving forms or in making a donation by phone.

Who governs Sheppard Pratt Health System?

Sheppard Pratt is governed by a Board of Trustees containing a cross-section of professionals from the business community, legal profession, academia, government and psychiatry. The Board has a variety of committees that oversee key health system functions.

What is the role of planned giving at Sheppard Pratt?

Planned giving is an increasingly popular means of marrying your personal financial goals to your philanthropic interests.  Bequests, charitable gift annuities and charitable trusts are among the most common planned giving vehicles and, when properly constructed, can simultaneously provide for Sheppard Pratt’s future and your immediate financial needs.

How can I provide for Sheppard Pratt in my will?

Alternatively, you may choose to give a percentage of your estate after other obligations are met.  Please consult your legal or financial advisor when drafting a will and feel free to contact us at any time during this process.
